Modha Rathri Review: When Has The Lead Pair Gotten Less Screen Time Than They Deserve?

For me, the only disappointment was that the lead pair did not get the screen time they deserved. Both actors did their parts so well that you wanted to see more of them, but the other characters got more time than the couple the movie is actually based on. Weird, isn’t it? As a movie, it’s a one-time watch. But the writer could have made it a hit if the supporting characters had been balanced better, while giving equal weight to Maruthu and Muthu.

Both characters have a backstory to tell, and it’s not as simple as it looks. They are carrying emotional baggage: grief, pain, frustration, unresolved questions, and so much more, all of which is dealt with over the span of one night. If you feel that a forced marriage can easily turn into two people accepting each other, then the writing has to focus on showing how the characters’ pasts are helping them bond as they finally find someone they can confide in. Even if it had to be comedy, there could have been situational comedy, with just one or two scenes focusing on the emotional intensity these characters are carrying. But everything between Maruthu and Muthu could have remained central to the story.

The family’s role should have ended with the couple getting married and then running away from the chaos that same night. Everything that unfolds after that should have been the couple’s story, not the family’s.

Coming to the actors who played Maruthu and Muthu, Rishikanth and Anishma, both have played their parts so well. While Rishikanth balances his comic timing beautifully with the grief his character is carrying, Anishma comes across as one of those rare female actors who gets comedy right. Unfortunately, this movie did no justice to them or to what they could have brought to the table.
