Oh My Venus Review: I Watched This Series 5 Times In 1 Month… It Is My Absolute Favourite RomCom!

Oh My Venus is a realistic web series. RomCom makes the ‘love your body’ message easy to digest.

This web series talks about, I wouldn’t say, body positivity, I guess, fitness would be the right word here. It subtly tells you how important it is to be fit – both physically and mentally. It also defines fitness for you. For example, Kang Joo-eun is said to have ruined her body not because she’s fat but because she has adopted an extremely unhealthy lifestyle which has led to health issues like thyroid. On the other hand, her assistant, who is fatter than her, is said to be healthy because she is disease-free and her weight isn’t causing her any issues.

Similarly, two examples have been put forth again when it comes to body positivity and mental health – Kang Joo-eun and Oh Soo-jin. Where Kang Joo-eun is seen adamant on losing all that thyroid weight and is happy even her boyfriend breaks up with her, Oh Soo-jin comes across as an insecure and depressed female who is always worried that she might lose all that she has. This comes from her early life trauma that came along with being overweight and also, feeling neglected. All of this has been done without being preachy and boring.

But yes, the plus point of Oh My Venus is Kim Young-ho (So Ji-sub) and Kang Joo-eun (Shin Min-a) chemistry. Their story is so convincing and fun to watch. The way they meet, their instant connection, banter, constant fights, and the progression of their love story is fun to watch. And no, it’s not just fun that keeps you hooked.

Young-ho’s own battle with his illness and her mental strength and lone fight to overcome everything he has been through and going through in life is admirable. Full marks to the writer for the realistic writing. I am sure it will motivate many to fight their battles with integrity. And full credit goes to the director and the actors for making it so believable.

I do not want to give away any part of the story because it is worth investing every minute of your time. So, no spoilers! I will have one complaint though – the Woo-sik and Soo-jin plot was totally unnecessary. As an audience, this is the only part where you might just fast forward the series to the good part, of course. It is a distraction. I know they meant well with this track as well but honestly, they should have cut down the length. It’s super boring.

P.S: Girls, drop everything and watch it for So Ji-sub. This man will make you fall head over heels in love with him with this character.

Streaming On: Netflix
