If you are someone who does not like hour-long episodes in the name of a web series, The Lift is for you. Not just that, the story is also interesting. I am a firm believer that the impact of a message delivered in minutes (all episodes are under 15 minutes) or seconds is far greater than that of a message delivered through a 20-episode web series or a three-hour film.
Speaking of the story, the series starts with four strangers trapped in a lift that’s stopped functioning. They are waiting for someone to come to their rescue, but no one shows up. What unfolds later is a bit unexpected, but it’s nothing that you haven’t seen already. As the story progresses, it tries to tell us a lot about good and evil, life and death. But… But…
It doesn’t preach, so if you feel that it is trying to teach you a lesson that you can take away with you, I do not think so. Still, you start wondering about right and wrong, and how we live our lives. While a posh, decent lady who looks very woke might turn out to be a bitch, someone who has every reason to behave indecently or even commit a crime can turn out to be a nice person. Having said that, why does life make them all take the same route? Does life choose you based on your good deeds? If that’s the case, why do we say that God takes away the good folks first? Well, since the series seems to have ended with just its first season, we will have to wait for the makers to return with Season 2 (if that’s in the plan) to get some answers.
Coming to the performances, everyone has done justice to their part except Adaa Khan. It literally looked like it was the first day of her acting class and she was trying to be natural, but only the viewers could tell that she needed a lot of practice and hard work before she could call herself an actor. I am not saying that the others were exceptional, but they looked and felt like their respective characters. On the other hand, she clearly looked amateurish.
Final Verdict: The story is different. It’s a wonderful attempt to present something worth noticing. So yes, it’s a thumbs up from me.
