Irumudi Review: Started So Well But The Climax Took An Expected Turn And Ruined The Film

Irumudi truly started well. It’s over two hours long, but as you watch it, you feel like you are watching a middle-class family live their ordinary life while the father is trying to bring about extraordinary changes in society by standing up and fighting against what is wrong. The best part is that every miscreant around him is scared to death of him. As the movie sets its tone and moves the plot ahead, we see a lovely bond between Trinadh and his daughter, Manikanta,  which again tells us why Trinadh is doing what he is doing. This film, to be very honest, could have set an example of how women should be treated (unfortunately, society still needs to be taught this) and how women should stand up for themselves — and how friends and families should also stand up for women in the house instead of siding with the society that tries to suppress them.

Irumudi tried hard to bring social issues to the forefront and give them a voice while changing people’s perspectives, but it felt like the makers couldn’t understand how to offer the right solution to these problems. They could have peeled back a lot of layers, dived deeper, and even planned sequels by keeping it crisp and cutting down the storyline.

While the pace of the entire film was slow, towards the end, it was rushed. It felt like the writer didn’t know who to blame and made every character he could think of a culprit. When you have good but complex characters around, it is not necessary to turn them into villains at the end for no reason, just because you think that will surprise the audience — it doesn’t anymore. Writers need to come up with innovative ideas to both shock and surprise the audience.

All in all, it’s an okay film to watch. If you do not know what to watch this weekend, you can give it a shot, but I am warning you about the climax — it will disappoint you for sure.
