Doctor Slump Review: Though The Plot Talks About Mental Health And Depression, The Series Isn’t Gloomy At All

If you love korean rom-coms, it’s safe to watch Doctor Slump. When I first read the plot, I was a bit skeptical about watching this show but then I thought of giving it a shot. To my surprise, this series turned out to be a refreshing and fun show.

The story, as it is given everywhere, revolves around two high school competitors, who were also toppers. What happens to these toppers once they pass out? That’s an interesting story. While Ha-neul struggles to find her place in the medical field, Jeong-woo gets trapped in a conspiracy which is about to end his medical career.

On one hand, Jeong-woo is forced to take a break from practicing, Ha-neul, on the other hand, quits her job as she couldn’t take humiliation at the workplace anymore. As a result of these traumatic twists in their lives, their mental health starts getting affected. While Ha-neul slips into depression and is on medication, Jeong-woo, slowly, starts showing PTSD symptoms.

What gives them hope in this difficult time is their accidental reunion. At first, as Jeon-woo realises that Ha-neul is on medication for depression, he does everything in his power to bring her back to normal. And to a certain extent, it works. They, almost immediately, fall in love as they emphatise with each others’ situations. Their journey, somewhat, becomes easier from there.

As the series moves ahead, we see Ha-neul recovering and Jeong-woo’s PTSD symptoms get worse as he comes out clean in the medical negligence case and tries to return to work. This time, it’s Ha-neul who helps him deal with his trauma.

The story takes a u-turn again when we see that Ha-neul’s wounds are deeper and some outside force cannot help her heal till she finds the strength and courage to fight the demons herself.

It’s a romcom so both the leads heal and they live happily ever after.

What makes Doctor Slump worth your time? Though some tracks and twists are not well-written or look unnecessary and forced, the way Ha-neul’s family stands with Jeong-woo during trying times and the way they bond with each other is heart-warming to watch. Similarly, the love and chemistry between the lead pair is soothing. Everything falls in place easily. So that it doesn’t get emotionally heavy for the audience and yet the message the makers want to give their audience is delivered effectively.

If you want something light-hearted and fun to watch, Doctor Slump is your go-to KDrama.
