If you love watching bookish stories, you will like Three Of Us. There are some books we pick and it simply tells us a story – a story that can belong to anyone – it doesn’t preach or come with a moral – a happy or a sad ending. It just is! It exists!
What is Three Of Us all about?
It’s a story of a married woman, Shailaja who has been diagnosed with Dementia and wants to revisit her past one last time before she starts forgetting everything – and everyone.
One fine evening, Shailaja asks her husband if he can take a few days off from work so that they can go to Vengurla. Since she is about to start losing her memory, the signs of which she is already showing, he takes her to the place she is longing to visit without questions.
As they reach the place, Shailaja immediately starts looking for Pradip Kamat, her childhood friend. Since it’s a small village and most of the residents are people she knows, it doesn’t take much time for her to find him.
Shailaja and Pradip, both are now married to different people and though have accepted their fate and realities, they still find peace in each other. Shailaja revisits the past by visiting her old friends and places that she used to when she lived there, including her home where the tragedy hit the family after which they moved to Mumbai. Unfortunately, Shailaja couldn’t come back earlier as she wasn’t capable of doing so – her circumstances also didn’t allow her to.
Both Shailaja and Pradip’s spouses know about their past. Where Dipankar gets to know about it after he meets Pradip and observes her wife’s changed behaviour, Sarika already knew their story.
The beauty of this film is how maturely both the spouses handle this unrequited love of their partners and just let them be. Shailaja is always accompanied by her husband, Dipankar, whenever Pradip takes her to familiar places or to meet their old friends. But still, the duo is given time away from everyone to reminisce and say the unsaid things.
That’s Three of Us for you – a mature love story about love, life, and closure. It’s not for everyone though. It’s slow-paced and has a vibe not everyone would be comfortable with.
But again, if you are a lover of good stories, you will enjoy Three Of Us. Pick as per your choice of cinema.
